As the conflict in Iran continues to drive up gas, fertilizer and food costs, a new poll showed North Dakotans are split on supporting military action there.

The poll by the North Dakota News Cooperative shows more than 25% of respondents said it is the most pressing issue facing the country right now. Among respondents, 50% are in favor of U.S. military action in Iran, while 48% oppose it.

Mark Jendrysik, professor of political science at the University of North Dakota, said the state’s strong Republican base is likely driving the slightly higher support.

"For the most part, you have people who trust Donald Trump, who support him very strongly, who think he's doing the right thing, and with the vibe I've heard from a lot of people is this is necessary," Jendrysik explained. "It should've been done long ago, and we can take the short-term pain for some long-term gain."

The majority of respondents reported being concerned about rising gas and energy prices but it is not influencing big changes in driving behavior. About 75% of North Dakotans say they are not taking fewer trips or driving shorter distances because of increased gas prices.

Jendryski noted economic impacts from the conflict have been relatively moderate in North Dakota compared to other states. He pointed out local refineries and large-scale oil production have helped cushion price increases. While farmers express concerns about rising fertilizer prices, Jendryski added the agricultural effects have not yet reached the forefront of public discourse.

"There is a big growing split between Fargo and the rest of the state in terms of opinion," Jendrysik observed. "The Fargo area is about a quarter of the state's population now and growing, which hasn't yet reached a sort of critical mass in terms of affecting the political alignment in the state. But down the road it might."

The poll shows opposition to military action in Iran mostly comes from self-identified Democrats, independents and women. Residents largely support the country’s alliance with Israel and a small percentage of respondents support an alliance with Iran.
